The Humble Mind

Scared. Confused. Lost. Excited.

Just some of the emotions we feel when we finally decide we’re done trying to fit the mold life handed us.

Whether it’s taken a life changing event or you finally decided to listen to that voice in the back of your mind telling you you owe it to yourself, I hope you find a safe space here to embrace the opportunity of becoming a cycle breaker.

The Problem

For many of us , knowing the struggles previous generations had to face to provide us with the opportunities we have today, there’s no surprise why we feel the pressure to succeed. Growing up, we absorbed our parents’ and grandparents’ worries and hardships like sponges, unintentionally taking on their unspoken pain. We saw life as a constant struggle that demanded hard work, grit, and major sacrifices. Success was made out to be this one-size-fits-all definition based on the two things our elders desired the most – security and stability.  We were taught to follow a set path of academic achievement, a prestigious career, marriage, and of course parenthood to rinse and repeat the cycle. A path that left little room for individual aspiration or authentic expression. A path where any deviation would be deemed as failure in the eyes of our family and society.

With this narrative deeply etched into our minds, we have subconsciously adopted a series of habits to prevent jeopardising our chances of fulfilling it. Habits like playing it safe and sticking to what’s familiar, people-pleasing our way through conflict and confrontation and seeking perfection and continuous progress in everything we do, all in attempt of conforming to that of what is expected of us.

But as we navigate through the complexities of adulthood, we begin to realise that these ways of being no longer serve us. You’ve noticed recurring patterns in the challenges you encounter keeping you stuck in a viscous cycle. You start to notice patterns in the types of challenges you face and how they affect different aspects of your life. Why you struggle to have your needs met in relationships despite having communicated them. Why you feel stagnant in a job you have only ever described as your dream job, why no matter how much you achieve it never feels enough.  The beliefs and values that once felt like sturdy pillars keeping you safe have now turned into restrictive chains holding you back from fulfilling your potential.

You now stand at the crossroads of tradition and transformation, where the path ahead diverges into two distinct directions. One lies the familiar, the comfortable, the well-trodden path of generational conditioning, aligning with everything you ever knew and have been up until this point. Down the other is an unknown, uncharted territory, where there is a chance of finding a new and better way to live, a way that aligns with the person you want to be. You understand forging your own path could mean challenging the status quo, defying expectations, and having to deal with the discomfort of uncertainty. You know this path is most definitely not the easiest and some of you may have already been down it only to feel the wrath and its repercussions emphasising why maybe no one before you went down this path.

But here’s the thing: The beliefs and life lessons we grew up with were shaped by a different time, a different context, and a different set of challenges. For many of us as the first generation to have surpassed the challenges of survival we fail to realise we no longer have to suppress our potential in exchange for security and stability.  For the first time we are able to seek meaning from our existence, find fulfilment and purpose through our livelihoods and define success on our own terms. For the first time we are able to take risks, step out of our comfort zones and embrace change instead of actively avoiding it. For the first time we are able to prove it is possible to honour our heritage and the sacrifices made whilst embracing our authentic selves, paving the way for future generations. It’s time to we shed the shackles of the past and embraced a new way forward. It’s time we redefined success on our own terms based on our chosen values. It’s time we faced the music now to not just change our lives but of all the lives that follow suit.

So tell me, are you ready to redefine what’s possible for you?
